FISH FRIDAY JULY 31 UNION TAVERN
Yet again the quiet village of Union must endure a scourge descending upon them. Despite surviving of floods, depressions, locusts, and attacks by angry Native American Peoples and outlaws, Union must suffer the monthly invasion of the FWAHC again. As always we shall eat fish, throw darts, eat chips, throw down a few pints and other wise continue our adolescence. Barring bad weather, (or in Bob Shaw's case lost drain plugs) there is no reason not to lower the hood and drive with all due haste for this fun monthly event. |

WELCOME TO NEW OR RENEWED MEMBERS
Two new members have joined FWAHC. Mr. and Mrs. David Barnes of Lincoln have joined. They are the owners of a green rubber bumper Midget.
Also joining us is Christopher Piper of Lincoln. Christopher owns a nice red 1970 MGB tourer. Welcome to all new members.

The Heartland Regional: Our Annual June Tour To Independence
The spirit of the FWAHC was demonstrated at the awards ceremony when Steve, the Master of Ceremonies, queried who among the group had driven, not trailered, more than 200 miles to attend the event. Every member of the Nebraska delegation stood up.
The bulk of the group met in Nebraska City at the Discount Mall at about 10:30 A.M. The Fremont contingent including Ken and Vicki Grant, Leo and JoAnn Thietje, Mike and Elaine Cerney, Marvin and Sue Marshall of Omaha, all in MGB roadsters, and Bob Shaw and Martha Johnson in the not quite completed, and rumored to be mythical, MGA roadster, and John and Bev Ulrich in the Bugeye and BMW support vehicle left for the leisurely tour to Independence via Route 7 and other secondary highways. We were joined later by Jim Danielson and Barbara Rixstine, MGBGT. Jerry and Nancy Needham, Bugeye, and John and Terry O'Brien, Bugeye and Pontiac support vehicle, whose schedules did not allow for them to make the leisurely tour with us. There were no difficulties on the way, save for the speedometer in the A giving up about midway between St. Joe and Independence, and a bit of a heat rash on Martha Johnson's ankle caused by an absent transmission tunnel plug.
The barbecue was good , as usual, and the unofficial hospitality room in 142 was rocking until a bit past midnight. We were delighted and gratified to see a memorial page to Shorty Koch in the program, and we raised a glass to Shorty's memory. We also raised a glass to Ben Anderson, who was suffering through the Glenn Miller Festival in Clarinda, IA, the result of a scheduling error similar to Napoleon's scheduling breakfast with Wellington at Waterloo.
Saturday dawned clear. Several club members took advantage of a free car wash at the Baptist Church down the street from the motel, and then proceeded to the square for the car show and monopoly game. We were delighted when Pat Koch arrived with children Randy, Cary, and Lori Dunn in the "Aqua" MGA and the yellow B roadster. Some members took part in a tour to Missouri Town, a living museum dedicated to the early settlers of Missouri.
The Awards Banquet was held at Ophellia's on the square. Marvin and Sue Marshall won the early B class, took second in the photo contest, and won the Monopoly on the Square game. Leo and JoAnn Thietje won second in the MGB Mark II class, and John Ulrich took second in the open class with his Bugeye. The food and drink were excellent, and door prizes were won by almost every member of the FWAHC.
After the banquet it was back to Howard Johnson's for more food, drink. After having enough fun to attract the attention and admiration of several from Missouri, a number of whom were riding Harleys instead of LBC's, we retired for the evening.
Sunday dawned cloudy. We left Independence with the hoods stowed, but stopped about Platte City to erect them, install side curtains, and prepare for the rain. We stopped for lunch in Falls City where we separated into those who were on a tight schedule, who ate at Sonic Drive Inn and those who wanted to sit down, who had buffet at H & B Steak house about 1/2 a block off the square. The trip was uneventful, save for the speed. The MGA sans speedometer was in the lead. Bob thought he was doing about 55 to 60. Bev, in the BMW with working instrumentation later reported that the speed was actually between 60 and 75. Still, no tickets, no harm.
The Heartland Regional will move to St. Joe, MO next year. The committee allowed that there was nothing wrong with Independence, but that it was time to try something new to keep the event from growing stale. We plan on being there again next year, and hope that all members can make the show. It would be nice, when they ask who drove more that 200 miles, to have half of the place stand up. It would be even nicer to have most of them be from Nebraska. |
YOUR LBC AS A TIME MACHINE:
THE LAKE TOUR.
At 11:00 Saturday, May 30, a group consisting of Bob Shaw and Martha Johnson, Sterling, Ben and Beverly Anderson, MGCGT, John and Terry O'Brien, Bugeye, Frank and Bonnie Watts, MGB roadster, Jim and Joe Stork, box Sprite, and Steve and Tootie Witt, Spitfire met at the State Farm parking lot for the first driving tour of the year. The event began with a tour of area lakes, presenting the opportunity for spirited driving on paved roads with curves and hills. The front part of the group began to pull away from the rest of the caravan, so a quick stop was made to allow the rest of the group to reform. When the group was reunited, one member of the second group queried about the speed limit. It turns out he thought it to be about 35. Another member (named John and driving a red bugeye, but we are not telling on anyone) allowed as to how it was higher than that, but it had been pushed a bit. Upon arrival at the Vineyard, the group went en masse to the winery, where we purchased tickets which were exchanged for samples of James Arthur's prize winning wines. An excellent meal was enjoyed amidst the sounds of brave knights doing battle, and madrigals singing. Wenches and Crafts persons were also present in number on the grounds.
It is our understanding that the event drew 250% more people than expected, and expanded version is planned for next year. If the interest is there, this may well become an annual event. Inform Bob Shaw of your wishes on this one. |

To all who have wished a chance for revenge on our favorite tormentors, Jim Danielson is dismantling an old rubber bumper Midget the afternoon of the 11th. The party-or ah-workday will begin at about 1:00 P.M. at his home, 1310 Idylwild, in Lincoln. |
Best wishes Barbara
We wish Barbara Rixstine a speedy recovery after her recent surgery. All went well, and she is on the mend at home. |
