rubber. "All I can say is, imagine Carl Lewis running 100 meters in sandals or flip-flops." Gerry and Mike would like to invite other members to come and have fun, or just drive your car over and be a spectator for a short time. We proudly fly the Union Jack and pit together in one unified spirit.
Car WatchingA Flatwater look at San Franciscoby John Ulrich Perhaps it's my age, or priorities, but every time I visit a different part of the country, some of the excitement comes from getting a feel for the automotive population. Having spent time in Southern California, the "City by the Bay" was uncharted territory. After six days in the area, several things greatly surprised me. There just are not any British cars out running around! If you exempt "new" Jag XJs, and Land Rovers, the total car count was THREE! Yes, that's right THREE, and only one of those was moving at the time. Holy smoke (probably Castrol) there were at least twenty beat up Alfa Spiders on the hoof. Now, I must add that every day was a beautiful "top down" day, so there can be no excuses there. I saw a Mini parked on the street, and a TR-6 under a car cover. The grand prize winner was a most distinguished old gentleman, (think Nigel Shiftright) in a beautiful primrose |
yellow MG-TC motoring between the cliffs and surf on Pacific Highway 1. Another surprise is that you can look any direction in traffic and see several 3 Series BMWs or Porsche Boxters. Those two cars might as well be named as the official vehicles of the "under 40s." It seems to me that everyone can afford a nice car, but few can afford a house and garage to put it in. I can't get over the nonchalance of parking a relatively expensive car on the street every night. There are a few Miatas in the city, but I think the relationship between stop signs on steep hills, and low torque engines gives the clutch the approximate life of a fruit fly. Life is good on Pacific 1. The trouble is that on a Sunday afternoon I'd never get the Bugeye out of 4th, the TR-6 out of 3rd, or the MG out of 2nd. I'm sure if you go far enough up or down the coast things would improve. I also know that there are thousands of "sports car roads" we never had the chance to explore. It is no doubt beautiful country, and the home of Rice-A-Roni, a magnificent city. All in all, I'll stay put, live in my house, play with my cars, and let my son drive when we fly out to see him. Joe and Jane ReturnA hearty Nebraska welcome back home to Joe and Jane Mock. They have been wintering down in Arizona where Joe has been properly spanking the butts of all those RC Airplane buddies of his. Joe has some beautiful planes (sort of like those award-winning cars of his) and he and Jane have a lot of stories to tell. We invite them to come out to our events and share some of them with us. |
